Professions in Tanzania

Tanzania's occupational classification includes legislators, administrators and managers; professionals; technicians and associate professionals; clerical support workers; service and shop sales workers; skilled agricultural and fishery workers; craft and related trades workers; plant and machine operators and assemblers; and elementary occupations. The Tanzania People's Defence Force and JKT have additional service categories. In the 2025 Integrated Labour Force Survey for the United Republic of Tanzania, skilled agricultural and fishery workers represented 51.6% of employment, followed by elementary occupations at 16.0%, service and shop sales workers at 15.9%, craft workers at 7.8% and plant and machine operators at 4.5%. Technicians and associate professionals accounted for 1.8%, professionals for 1.6%, managers for 0.4% and clerical workers for 0.4%. Zanzibar showed a different profile, with elementary occupations at 31.6%, service and shop sales workers at 23.0%, craft workers at 18.5% and skilled agricultural and fishery workers at 12.0%; national and Zanzibar figures should therefore be compared cautiously because definitions and economic structures differ. Formal vacancies are concentrated in different groups from total employment. The 2024/25 Employment and Earnings Survey, covering the public sector, private establishments with at least 50 employees and a sample of establishments with 5 to 49 employees, recorded 50.3% of formal vacancies for professionals and 27.7% for technicians and associate professionals. About 82.4% of those vacancies required no previous work experience, while 15.2% requested one to two years, 2.0% three to four years and 0.4% at least five years. This creates strong entry relevance for qualified professional and technical occupations even though they represent a smaller share of total employment. Common entry pathways include secondary education followed by university study, accredited technical and vocational education and training, competence-based education and training, vocational-centre training, apprenticeships, informal work experience and self-employment. NACTVET registers and accredits technical and vocational institutions and programmes, assures quality and awards qualifications within the National Technical Awards progression, beginning at Basic Technician Certificate level NTA 4. VETA provides vocational training and occupational standards. A qualification is more reliable for formal work when the institution and programme are approved. Programme duration and cost depend on the provider and programme; Tanzania has no single nationwide price for all occupational training. The VETA Recognition of Prior Learning programme, known as Urasimishaji wa Ujuzi, assesses skills gained through informal work, life experience or informal apprenticeships. Its stated access conditions include Tanzanian citizenship, age 18 to 45, at least five years of experience in the field and an occupation on the VETA list. Current fields include masonry and bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, motor-vehicle mechanics, food production, food and beverage service or sales, welding and fabrication, tailoring, plumbing and pipe fittings, domestic electrical installation and auto body repair. The process includes an application and skills assessment, followed where needed by gap training of up to 14 days, followed by a Vocational Module Certificate. VETA reports that 21,000 apprentices had been certified through the programme since 2012. The certificate can support formalisation, company registration, access to tenders and employability, but it does not by itself replace a separate licence required for a regulated occupation. University qualifications are handled through the Tanzania Commission for Universities, or TCU. TCU evaluates foreign university awards through the Foreign Awards Assessment System for employment or further study. NACTVET evaluates foreign technical and vocational awards that do not have university status. Academic recognition is separate from professional registration, so an engineer, health professional, nurse or midwife may still need registration, an examination, a practising licence or other approval from the relevant professional body. Professional-body awards, short courses, workshops and experience outside national qualification systems are excluded from the stated NACTVET equivalency process. Regulated occupations have additional requirements. The Engineers Registration Board, or ERB, requires engineering practitioners to register; employers may use only registered engineering practitioners. A Tanzanian citizen with a BSc, BEng or BTech may enter as a Graduate Engineer, while an Advanced Diploma may lead to Graduate Incorporated Engineer registration. Progression typically requires at least three years of practice plus the relevant professional assessment for Professional Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status, and further post-registration experience for Consulting Engineer or equivalent senior status. Practising licences, continuing professional development and periodic renewal apply to the relevant engineering categories. ERB application fees listed in the research include TZS 7,500 for engineering technician, Graduate Engineer or Graduate Incorporated Engineer applications, TZS 20,000 for Incorporated Engineer and TZS 30,000 for Professional Engineer, with other registration, licence and annual fees separate. Foreign engineers use a different temporary registration pathway tied to a Tanzania contract and registration in the home country. The Medical Council of Tanganyika handles medical, dental and allied-health registration. The process can include an undergraduate qualification, a pre-internship examination, provisional registration, internship, a post-internship examination and full registration. The MCT research lists an application fee of TZS 150,000 for full registration and TZS 50,000 for enlistment. The Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council requires a certificate, diploma or degree from a recognised institution and its licensure examination; first-degree graduates can receive provisional registration for internship. Its online services cover indexing, examinations, provisional or temporary registration, renewal and verification, with continuing professional development and renewal requirements applying as relevant. For employment on Mainland Tanzania, the Employment and Labour Relations Act, Cap. 366, recognises contracts for an unspecified period, a specified period for professionals or managerial staff and a specific task. Employers provide written particulars such as the job description, start date, duration or contract form, workplace, working hours, remuneration and benefits. The framework also covers core labour rights, protection against discrimination, collective bargaining and dispute settlement. The private-sector minimum wage order issued in 2025 takes effect on 1 January 2026 and varies by sector and geographical area; a contract or collective agreement can provide more favourable terms. Public-sector employment follows separate schemes for areas such as the civil service, local government, teaching, health and judicial service, with recruitment commonly handled through the Public Service Recruitment Secretariat and assessed against eligibility, qualifications and the applicable scheme of service. Occupational safety and health obligations apply according to the workplace and sector. The owner or occupier registers the workplace with OSHA, carries out a risk assessment at least once a year, maintains an occupational safety and health policy and funds protective measures. Worker health surveillance can include pre-placement, continuing and exit medical checks, while safety representatives and first-aid training support workplace controls. Agriculture, mining, construction, transport, manufacturing, health care and fishing carry different hazards that affect the required precautions. Career development can involve promotion based on performance, efficiency, seniority, career-development and succession plans in the public service. In regulated fields, workers may progress from graduate or provisional status to full professional registration and then to consulting, independent, senior clinical or senior technical roles. Continuing professional development, licence renewal, postgraduate study, supervised practice, consultancy and entrepreneurship can support progression. The Prime Minister's Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Relations handles labour standards, labour inspection and skills policy; NBS and the Office of the Chief Government Statistician Zanzibar produce labour statistics; VETA, NACTVET, TCU, OSHA, PSRS and profession-specific bodies handle their respective functions. The United Republic of Tanzania combines Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, but Zanzibar has separate labour and administrative responsibilities, so the applicable local authority and legal source should be checked for work on the islands.
