Languages in Thailand

Thai, called ภาษาไทย or phasa Thai, is the main national language of Thailand. Standard Thai is based largely on the speech of the central region and is used in formal education, administration, media, and many workplaces. Thai is written with its own script. The script represents consonants and vowels in a way that differs from the Latin alphabet, and written Thai does not normally use spaces between every word. Thai is a tonal language, so the pitch pattern of a syllable can change its meaning. Pronunciation, vowel length, final sounds, and polite particles all matter when people speak carefully. Thailand also has regional speech forms. Isan is closely connected with the Lao language area, and Northern Thai and Southern Thai have their own vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural associations. People may shift between a local variety and Standard Thai depending on the situation. Many ethnic communities use additional languages, including Malay in parts of the south and languages of hill and minority communities. Chinese, English, Burmese, Khmer, and other migrant or heritage languages may also be heard in homes, businesses, schools, and border areas. English is important in tourism, international business, higher education, and online communication, but it does not replace Thai for most daily interactions. A person may therefore need different languages for home, school, work, public services, and social life. Politeness in Thai includes respectful forms of address, particles such as ครับ or ค่ะ, and attention to age, role, and social context. The Thai greeting wai may accompany speech, but its use depends on the relationship and situation. A practical language plan should combine listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Start with useful phrases, names, numbers, directions, food, health, work, and polite requests, then add reading skills so you can understand signs and basic written information.
