Languages in Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste’s official languages are Tetum and Portuguese; English and Bahasa Indonesia are working languages. Tetum dominates everyday communication, Portuguese is central to formal education and public institutions, and English and Bahasa Indonesia serve regional and work-related purposes. Schools teach Portuguese and Tetum as core competencies, with a foreign language in the curriculum, while local languages support early learning and community life. Language learning is available through schools, universities, public-service programmes, cooperation courses and free online materials, but adult courses and certification options are more concentrated in Dili.
