Environment in Tonga

The environment in Tonga includes natural ecosystems and the conditions in which people live, work and travel. The archipelago has about 170 islands but only around 700 square kilometres of land spread across more than 700,000 square kilometres of sea. Reefs, lagoons, forests, water services, waste systems, coastal settlements and emergency arrangements are connected by fishing, tourism, development and climate hazards.

Surroundings

Surroundings in Tonga are shaped by spatial planning, utilities, water, waste services, air and noise controls, green spaces, emergency systems and community participation. No single national office manages all these functions; responsibilities are shared among public agencies, utility providers, island authorities and village structures. Services differ between Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, other islands and rural villages, while flooding, coastal hazards, drought and essential-service failures affect everyday conditions.
