The Ministry of Health leads a government-run health system serving the population of Tonga. It operates 14 health centres, including seven Community Health Centres, usually called CHCs, on Tongatapu, as well as Vaiola Hospital and three outer-island hospitals: Prince Ngu Hospital in Vavaʻu, Princess Fusipala Hospital in Haʻapai and Niu’eiki Hospital on ʻEua. Vaiola Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient care, emergency treatment, surgery, anaesthesia and intensive care, maternity and child health services, mental health care, isolation, radiology, computed tomography, ultrasound, mammography, pathology, blood-bank services, pharmacy, physiotherapy, eye care, ear, nose and throat care and dental care. Outer-island hospitals provide general outpatient and emergency care, but their paediatric, maternity, surgical, medical, pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services are more limited. ʻEua does not have radiology services. Staff stabilize serious cases and arrange referral to Vaiola Hospital when the required service is not available locally. Visiting specialists and regional or international referrals supplement local services when Tonga lacks a suitable specialist service. Island transport, limited resources and the frequency of specialist visits affect how quickly care can be obtained. Before illness requires hospital treatment, the Health Promotion Unit supports health education, screening for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, tobacco cessation, communicable-disease and sexually transmitted infection services, tuberculosis and HIV work, environmental health, immunization, family planning, sexual and reproductive health, antenatal and postnatal care, and youth, school and dental outreach. Immunization planning targets coverage above 90% in 2025–26 and above 95% in 2027–28. The Tonga Emergency Medical Assistance Team, known as TEMAT, provides clinical and public-health responses during outbreaks and other health emergencies. After treatment, services include chronic-disease and diabetes follow-up, physiotherapy, palliative care, post-discharge home follow-up for people requiring isolation and mental-health outreach in villages and homes. Integrated behavioural and community-based rehabilitation services are planned, while rules for follow-up after overseas referral are still being developed. Faitoʻo fakatonga, traditional Tongan healing, remains culturally established and is mainly informal or private; its formal integration into Ministry of Health services has not been verified. State medical and dental fees are authorized under the Health Services (Fees and Charges) Regulations. The Minister may grant exemptions or humanitarian waivers. The Health Services Act provides that adequate care should not be refused solely because a person cannot pay. The Public Health Information Protection Act 2025 protects confidentiality and gives people rights to access and correct their health information and to appeal relevant decisions. The Mental Health Act provides rights including access to a Community Visitor, notification within 48 hours in specified situations and a response within one week. Doctors, dentists, nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and pharmacists must practise within the registration and professional standards overseen by their respective boards.

Health care in Tonga is led by the Ministry of Health and combines prevention, primary care, hospital treatment, emergency services and follow-up care. Vaiola Hospital on Tongatapu is the 200-bed national referral centre, while hospitals and Community Health Centres provide services on the outer islands.
