Art in Turkey

Art in the Republic of Türkiye comes from many historical, religious, regional, and personal traditions. It can be found in museums and galleries, but also in homes, workshops, mosques, markets, festivals, books, films, and everyday objects. Traditional paper and book arts include ebru, in which colors float on water before being transferred to paper, and hat, the art of calligraphy. Tezhip uses detailed ornament, often with gold, while minyatür uses stylized small-scale painting to show people, places, stories, or events. Çini refers to decorated ceramic tiles and vessels, often associated with strong colors, repeated patterns, and architectural decoration. Kilim weaving uses flat-woven designs, and regional textiles may carry practical, family, or symbolic meanings. Ottoman court culture, Islamic artistic traditions, Anatolian craft, Central Asian influences, and local techniques all contributed to the visual language now associated with Turkish art. No single style represents every region or community. Architecture is a major part of the artistic landscape. Mosques, churches, synagogues, old houses, bazaars, bridges, palaces, and modern buildings show changing materials, religious needs, engineering, and urban life. Music and performance include classical Ottoman repertories, folk music, regional dance, popular music, theater, cinema, and new digital forms. Instruments, rhythms, and performance settings vary greatly between regions and communities. Contemporary artists may use painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, fashion, illustration, street art, or digital media. They often examine migration, memory, gender, city life, ecology, history, and identity. Art has practical limits as well as possibilities. A beautiful object may be handmade, factory-produced, devotional, decorative, or made for tourism, so ask about its use, process, and maker before assuming its meaning or value.
