Disasters in Turkey

The Republic of Türkiye faces several natural hazards because it has active fault zones, mountains, long coastlines, dry regions, and densely populated cities. The most important risks vary by place, with earthquakes, floods, wildfires, landslides, storms, avalanches, and drought among the main examples. An earthquake can damage buildings, roads, bridges, water lines, and communication networks. During shaking, people should drop, cover, and hold on, move away from windows, and avoid lifts and stairways until the shaking stops. Floods may follow heavy rain, overflowing rivers, or sudden water flow in low areas. Do not walk or drive through moving water, and move to higher ground when officials give a warning. Wildfires are a serious risk in hot and dry areas, especially near forests and the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Smoke can travel far, so people may need to close windows, leave early, and follow evacuation instructions. Municipalities, police, gendarmerie, health services, fire brigades, utilities, volunteers, and Türk Kızılay may also support rescue, shelter, medical care, food, and relief. The emergency number 112 connects people with emergency services. In a crisis, give the exact location, describe what happened, state injuries or immediate dangers, and keep the line free for urgent calls. A disaster plan should cover family contacts, meeting places, evacuation routes, medicines, documents, water, food, light, batteries, clothing, and basic first-aid items. A local designated gathering area is commonly called a toplanma alanı, and it should be known before an emergency. Preparedness reduces harm, but it cannot remove all risk. Buildings, roads, communications, and public services may fail, official information may be delayed, and people should avoid spreading unconfirmed messages or returning to unsafe buildings.
