Elections in Turkey

Elections are the main way citizens of the Republic of Türkiye choose political representatives. They also give voters a peaceful way to support a program, replace leaders, or influence local services. National elections cover the presidency and the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, known as TBMM. The President leads the executive branch, while members of the TBMM represent voters and take part in making national laws. Local elections choose officials such as mayors and municipal council members. They can also involve provincial councils, village heads, and neighborhood heads, called muhtarlar, depending on the local area. The Supreme Election Council is called the Yüksek Seçim Kurulu, or YSK. It sets out the practical election process, coordinates election boards, oversees polling arrangements, and handles election administration under the Constitution and election laws. Voters are assigned to polling places and use official ballot papers. Voting is secret, and polling officials count ballots at the polling place before results are combined through higher election boards. Political parties and candidates present ideas, promises, and records during campaigns. Voters may compare party programs, candidate qualities, alliances, and the likely effect of national or local policies. Election rules cover voter eligibility, candidate eligibility, campaign conduct, ballots, counting, complaints, and the announcement of results. Exact dates and procedures can differ between election types, so voters should follow the official instructions for the specific election. Elections do not directly choose every public official in Türkiye. For example, many ministers, governors, judges, and civil servants take their positions through appointment or professional procedures rather than a direct public vote.
