Family in Turkey

In the Republic of Türkiye, family is commonly understood as both the people in one household and a wider network of relatives. The Turkish word aile means family, and akraba means relatives. Households may include parents and children, couples without children, one-parent families, older relatives, or people living alone. Many relatives may live nearby or in another city while staying closely connected. Important family terms include anne for mother, baba for father, kardeş for sibling, abi for older brother, abla for older sister, amca for paternal uncle, dayı for maternal uncle, teyze for maternal aunt, hala for paternal aunt, and kuzen for cousin. Grandparents and older relatives may have an active role in childcare, advice, visits, and family celebrations. Support can also move in the other direction when adult children help older parents. Family occasions often include visits, shared meals, religious or national holidays, weddings, births, and mourning. Hospitality and offering food or tea can express care and respect. Marriage creates relationships between two families as well as between two partners. Engagement, called nişan, and wedding customs, called düğün traditions, vary widely by family and place, while a civil marriage is the formal state-recognized basis of marriage. Some families expect frequent contact, shared decisions, or help with housing and money. Other families place stronger value on privacy, equal independence, or living separately. Family can provide belonging, childcare, advice, emergency help, and practical opportunities. It can also create pressure about education, work, marriage, gender roles, money, or where someone should live. A useful first step is to ask how a person defines family, which relatives are close, what support is welcome, and which subjects are private. Respectful communication matters because one family’s normal habit may feel intrusive or distant to another.
