Study in Turkey

Higher education in the Republic of Türkiye is commonly called yükseköğretim. Universities operate under the national higher education framework overseen by the Council of Higher Education, known as Yükseköğretim Kurulu or YÖK. The main study levels are önlisans, usually a shorter associate degree, lisans, usually a bachelor’s degree, yüksek lisans, a master’s degree, and doktora, a doctorate. Program length and structure can differ by field. Universities may be state universities or foundation universities, called vakıf üniversiteleri. Foundation universities are private institutions with a public higher education role, and their programs, teaching language, and financial conditions must be checked individually. Domestic students commonly enter many undergraduate programs through the national YKS examination system. International students may follow different application routes, so they should use the university’s official admissions information and check recognition requirements in their home country. Programs may be taught in Turkish, English, or another language. Students need enough language ability for lectures, reading, examinations, and daily university life, not only for the application form. A degree program combines lectures, assignments, examinations, projects, laboratories, internships, or clinical practice depending on the subject. Students are responsible for tracking registration, attendance, assessments, and academic progress. Many programs use credit-based structures that support comparison and mobility, but transfer and recognition are never automatic. The receiving university or authority decides how previous study is counted. Higher education can open paths to professional work, research, public service, entrepreneurship, and further study. It also requires time, money, independent organization, and careful checking of whether the program leads toward the intended career.
