Romantic relationship in Turkey

In the Republic of Türkiye, a romantic relationship may be called ilişki, sevgililik, or simply dating in English. Sevgili means romantic partner, and flört can describe early romantic interest or a not-yet-defined relationship. People meet through school, work, friends, family introductions, shared activities, online spaces, or ordinary social life. The setting does not determine how serious the relationship is. Relationships may be private between two people, or families may become involved as trust grows. Family involvement can include introductions, visits, advice, or expectations, but each couple decides how much involvement is appropriate. Nişan means engagement or an engagement ceremony, and nişanlı means engaged. Some couples move from dating to engagement and then marriage, while others remain partners without following that path. Marriage celebrations are often called düğün, and a civil marriage is commonly called resmi nikâh. Wedding customs may include separate or combined family events, gifts, music, meals, and regional traditions. Public displays of affection and private dating arrangements vary by family, city, age, faith, and personal comfort. A behavior accepted by one couple or place may be uncomfortable or unsafe for another. A healthy relationship requires clear consent, honest communication, respect for boundaries, and freedom from threats or control. Consent must be freely given and can be changed at any time. Romantic relationships can provide companionship, care, and shared plans. They can also bring pressure involving family approval, secrecy, money, living arrangements, gender expectations, or different ideas about marriage. A first step is to discuss expectations about exclusivity, communication, family contact, privacy, money, and future plans. Meet in a safe setting, keep independent support, and seek help from a trusted person if there is fear, coercion, or violence.
