School in Turkey

The school system in the Republic of Türkiye is mainly organized by the Ministry of National Education, known as Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı or MEB. Education is divided into formal schooling and other learning routes. The basic school stages are ilkokul, or primary school, ortaokul, or middle school, and lise, or upper secondary school. The common structure is four years in each stage, creating a broad twelve-year school path. Children usually begin with early childhood education before primary school, although participation and local provision can differ. Primary school focuses on reading, writing, mathematics, social learning, science, and basic personal development. Middle school develops these subjects further and helps pupils prepare for the transition to upper secondary education. Guidance services may help students understand school types and future choices. Upper secondary schools include general Anatolian high schools, science-focused schools, social sciences schools, imam hatip schools, and vocational and technical schools. Their subjects, emphasis, and transition opportunities are different. Public schools are generally the main route, while private schools offer another option. School quality, class conditions, language support, transport, and extracurricular opportunities can vary between regions and individual schools. National or centralized examinations can affect entry to some schools and later university admission. Grades, school records, and examination results may all matter, depending on the transition. Families should treat school choice as a practical decision about learning needs, distance, language, support, school culture, and future plans. A school name alone does not show whether it is the right fit for a particular child.
