Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship usually leads to a recognized vocational qualification and often lasts 2 to 3.5 years.

School

School education in Turkmenistan covers formal preschool preparation, primary education and secondary education. Children normally enter primary school at age six, complete grades 1 to 4 in primary education, grades 5 to 10 in basic secondary education and grades 11 to 12 in complete secondary education. These three general-education stages are compulsory, and education in state schools is free. The system also includes specialized schools, school-gymnasiums, lyceums, boarding schools and special schools.

Languages

Turkmen is Turkmenistan’s state language and the main language of instruction. Foreign languages are required in general and vocational education, with English prominent and Russian widely used in institutional and early learning settings. Additional courses, examinations and digital resources are available through public institutions and selected providers, but fees, access and regional coverage vary.

Higher Education

Higher education in Turkmenistan, called ýokary hünär bilimi, is offered through universities, academies, conservatories and institutes and leads to Bachelor, Master or Specialist qualifications. Bachelor programs usually last four years, Master programs one to two years, and Specialist programs five to six years. State-funded and fee-paying places exist, with admission, study language and costs depending on the institution, program and admission plan.

Continuing Education

Upskilling in Turkmenistan develops, updates or broadens skills alongside or after initial education and work. The formal system includes advanced training (повышение квалификации) for existing skills and retraining (переподготовка кадров) for a new occupation or qualification. Courses may be provided by state or licensed non-state institutions, employers and other approved organizations, but the public offer and fees remain fragmented. Completion can lead to a training or retraining document after final assessment; it does not automatically create a new tertiary qualification.
