Environment in Tuvalu

Environment in Tuvalu covers both natural systems and the conditions in which people live. Nature includes nine low-lying coral atolls and reef islands, while everyday surroundings include homes, infrastructure, freshwater, sanitation, waste services and communal spaces. Environmental pressures differ between Funafuti and the outer islands, but warming, flooding, erosion, saltwater, pollution and limited land affect planning across the country.

Surroundings

Everyday surroundings in Tuvalu are shaped by homes and public infrastructure, freshwater and sanitation, coastal exposure, waste, green and communal spaces, safety systems and opportunities to participate in local decisions. Funafuti, especially Fongafale, faces the strongest pressure from density, scarce land, flooding, erosion, heat and saltwater, while services and infrastructure vary across the outer islands. National programmes and donor-supported projects address these conditions, but planned measures are not automatically available everywhere or already operating.
