Politics in Uganda

Politics in Uganda covers how public authority is organised and how citizens choose national and local representatives. The Constitution of Uganda 1995 provides the legal framework for the State, while the Electoral Commission manages elections. Political responsibilities are divided among national institutions, local governments and electoral bodies.

Elections

Uganda's elections allow eligible citizens to choose the President, Members of Parliament and local government representatives through secret ballots. The Electoral Commission (EC) registers voters, organizes polling, counts votes and publishes results, while handling initial electoral complaints. Voting requires Ugandan citizenship, age 18 or older and entry in the National Voters Register; registration and the Voter Location Slip are free.
