Civil law in Ukraine regulates relationships between people, companies, and other private parties. It covers property, contracts, debts, compensation for damage, personal non-property rights, and many other private matters. The main source is the Civil Code of Ukraine, called Цивільний кодекс України or ЦКУ. A civil right may arise from a contract, ownership, inheritance, damage, unjust enrichment, or another legal fact. A договір is a contract, and it can define what each party must do, when performance is due, and what happens after a breach. Common civil disputes concern unpaid money, defective performance, rented property, ownership, debt, damage to health or property, and protection of personal rights. Family, housing, land, and business matters may also involve special laws in addition to general civil rules. The person bringing a claim is the позивач, or claimant, and the person or organization being sued is the відповідач, or defendant. A claim is a позов. The court needs a legally recognized right, facts showing a violation or dispute, evidence, and a remedy that the law can provide. Evidence may include contracts, receipts, bank records, photographs, messages, expert opinions, official records, and witness statements. A нотариус, or нотаріус, can perform particular legal acts and certify documents, but notarization does not automatically prove that every statement in a dispute is true. Before filing a claim, a person should identify the parties, facts, legal relationship, requested remedy, evidence, and the competent court. Some disputes may benefit from negotiation, mediation, a formal demand, or another pre-court step. Court proceedings usually include filing, service on the other side, written positions, evidence, hearings, and a judgment. The parties must follow procedural instructions and may have rights to appeal an unfavorable decision under the applicable procedure. A judgment may still require enforcement. State or private enforcement officers, known as державні або приватні виконавці, can use lawful enforcement measures. Recovery may be difficult when the debtor has no identifiable assets, so practical enforceability matters when choosing a remedy. Civil law is flexible enough to solve many everyday problems, but it is not a promise that every loss will be compensated. Keep documents, act consistently with the contract, and obtain Ukrainian legal advice when property, large sums, limitation issues, or urgent protection is involved.
