Ukraine has a plural religious landscape. Many people identify with a Christian tradition, while others belong to Jewish or Muslim communities, follow another faith, or describe themselves as nonreligious. Orthodox Christianity is one of the largest religious traditions in Ukraine. Orthodox worship uses liturgy, icons, feasts, prayer, fasting, church music, and community life, but the organization and identity of Orthodox communities can differ. The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church follows the Byzantine liturgical tradition while being in communion with Rome. It has a strong historical presence especially in western Ukraine and shares many forms of worship with Eastern Christian communities. Roman Catholic parishes and Protestant churches are also part of Ukrainian religious life. Protestant communities may include Baptist, Pentecostal, Lutheran, Reformed, and other groups, each with its own worship style and organization. Jewish communities have deep roots in Ukrainian cities and towns. Synagogues, cemeteries, schools, cultural organizations, holidays, food traditions, and family memory help preserve Jewish religious and cultural life. Muslim life in Ukraine includes Crimean Tatar and other communities. Mosques, prayer, Ramadan, family practice, and community organizations are important parts of this experience, especially where Muslim communities are established. Religious practice may appear in baptism, weddings, funerals, Easter and Christmas customs, blessings, fasting, icons, candles, and visits to sacred places. Some people keep cultural customs without regular belief or worship. Religious buildings can be places of prayer, heritage, art, education, and community support. Their meaning should be understood from the community that uses them, not only from their architecture. Respectful participation requires modest behavior, attention to local rules, and permission before photographing people or sacred rituals. Religion in Ukraine is connected with identity, but no single faith describes every Ukrainian.
