Friendship in Uruguay

Friendship in Uruguay is called amistad, and a friend is an amigo or amiga. The word compañero or compañera can also describe a friendly relationship formed through school, work, sport, study, or another shared activity. Friendships often grow slowly through repeated meetings and shared experiences. People may become friends through family connections, the barrio, the liceo, facultad, work, clubs, cultural groups, or online contact that later becomes real-life contact. Common ways to spend time together include matear, having coffee, eating an asado, walking, playing sport, listening to music, studying, or visiting one another. Expensive plans are not required for a friendship to be meaningful. A friendship can be casual, close, old, new, local, or long-distance. Friends may communicate every day or only from time to time, as long as both people understand the rhythm and feel respected. Trust grows when friends keep confidence, tell the truth with care, respect differences, and help without controlling each other. Saying no to an invitation or favor should not end a healthy friendship. Friendship groups may include people of different ages, backgrounds, identities, and family situations. Some friendships are mixed-gender, while others are formed around a shared interest or life stage. Conflict is normal when people misunderstand a message, cancel plans, feel left out, or disagree. A calm conversation, a clear apology, and a change in behavior can repair many problems. Friendship must remain safe and voluntary. Threats, humiliation, pressure for money or sex, constant monitoring, and isolation from other people are not signs of healthy friendship.
