Crime in Uzbekistan

The main law-enforcement body in Uzbekistan is the Ministry of Internal Affairs, called Ichki ishlar vazirligi in Uzbek and often shortened to IIB in local usage. District and city police handle many first reports, immediate safety concerns, investigations, and public-order matters. A local profilaktika inspektori, or prevention inspector, may work with a neighborhood and its mahalla. This officer can support prevention work, receive information about local problems, and connect residents with the wider police structure. Common practical risks include theft, pickpocketing, burglary, street robbery, fraud, online scams, document misuse, and vehicle-related crime. Risks can be higher in crowded places, transport areas, nightlife settings, informal markets, or during rushed transactions. Scams may use false promises, urgent requests, fake officials, suspicious payment instructions, or offers that ask for personal data. A safe rule is to pause, verify the person or organization independently, and never share passwords, one-time codes, or banking details. The mahalla can be useful for prevention because neighbors often know local conditions and vulnerable households. It is a community structure, not a replacement for police, prosecutors, courts, or emergency medical services. After an incident, move to a safe place first and seek medical help if needed. Then record what happened, preserve messages or other evidence, note witnesses and locations, and report to the relevant police unit or another competent authority. Police, prosecutors, and courts have different roles. Police usually receive information and investigate, prosecutors supervise or conduct parts of the legal process, and courts decide cases according to law. Foreign visitors and residents should keep identity documents secure, use copies where appropriate, and ask for language help if they do not understand a procedure. Do not sign a document, make a payment, or hand over a device merely because someone creates pressure. Formal reporting can be important, but outcomes may depend on evidence, jurisdiction, language, and the type of incident. Community support helps, while serious threats, violence, extortion, and organized fraud require direct contact with official services rather than private confrontation.
