Costs in Vatican City

Vatican City has no documented public rent index, household consumption basket or general cost-of-living figure. Costs therefore cannot be estimated reliably by transferring figures from Rome or Italy. The decisive factors are the person's residence permit, work or service connection, employer benefits, institutional accommodation and whether household members live or commute outside Vatican City. Housing access is fragmented: documented pathways include institutionally assigned accommodation and Swiss Guard barracks, while no open general rental market has been established. Standard rents, deposits, ancillary charges and allocation times are not publicly documented, so these amounts should be confirmed in writing with the responsible institution or employer. Utilities are supplied through institutional arrangements involving power, district heating, water, heating and plumbing services, and waste management. Published information mentions an ACEA electricity contract using 100% renewable electricity and district heating, but household tariffs, consumption models and connection charges are not available. Food access includes the Annona, also called Tigre-Annona or Spaccio Annonario, an internal supermarket described for Governorate and Holy See employees and residents. It reopened on 15 October 2025 with about 11,000 products and a daily low-price strategy, with collection service. Special advantages are described for people over 70, large families and parents with children aged 0 to 3, but individual prices, a standard monthly basket, payment rules and discount amounts are not published. Health costs depend on eligibility for the Fondo Assistenza Sanitaria (FAS), the health assistance scheme for eligible people, and on family enrollment. Authorized residents may be able to apply under the FAS rules, but current conditions should be verified. At the Farmacia Vaticana, an identity document and the original paper prescription are required; digital prescriptions are not accepted. Current medicine prices, co-payments, reimbursement rates and FAS contributions are not publicly established, while medicines unavailable in Italy may require a functional alternative abroad. Childcare is available through the San Francesco e Santa Chiara Nursery School for children of employees aged 3 to 36 months, from Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 18:30, in Italian and English. The 2026 Estate Ragazzi Mini Club is described for employee families with children aged 3 to 5. Fees, meals, application deadlines and capacity rules are not published. The Swiss Guard Foundation co-finances the Swiss School in Rome and provides additional family, school, housing-related and insurance support in some cases; these arrangements do not describe the costs of every Vatican City household. Tenured Governorate employees with at least three children can receive a family allowance of EUR 300 per month from 1 January 2025 until the children reach 18 or finish studies, up to age 24. Governorate rules also record paid parental leave for birth, adoption or care, with the available record describing a change from three to five paid leave units; the exact unit and personal eligibility should be confirmed with the employer. Tigre-Annona discounts and FAS family coverage may provide further support, but neither is a general benefit for all residents. Internal distances are short, but mobility costs can become substantial when a person lives outside Vatican City or commutes through Rome. The Vatican railway station connects to the Italian railway network under the Lateran Treaty. An employee lease offered for 2025/26 covers electric or hybrid vehicles with assistance and insurance, but conditions and installments are individual. No local public-transport tariff, fuel benchmark, parking benchmark or private-car cost for Vatican City has been verified. Communication costs include postal services such as Posta Prioritaria up to 2 kg, for which tariff tables are available. Private internet, telephone and mobile-data prices have not been verified. Published leisure prices include EUR 20 for a full Vatican Museums admission and EUR 10 at the reduced rate, plus EUR 5 for online reservation; school visits cost EUR 5 plus EUR 2 reservation, student visits EUR 10 plus EUR 5 reservation, and children aged 0 to 6 are free. The last Sunday of the month is generally free. Castel Gandolfo admission is listed at EUR 12 at the full rate. Employees, Holy See and Vatican City State personnel and religious visitors may receive reduced prices, while employee sports-centre and summer-program fees are not published. A practical monthly budget should list any housing contribution or rent, food, utilities, FAS contributions and medical co-payments, medicines, childcare or school, external mobility, communication and leisure. One-time costs such as registration, transport and household equipment vary by the specific assignment and accommodation. Three different situations produce very different totals: an institutional resident, clergy member or Swiss Guard may receive accommodation, services, school or insurance partly through the institution; a tenured Governorate employee with a family may pay private household costs while receiving employee benefits; and an authorized resident without employer support may need to clarify accommodation, FAS access, food access and utilities separately. No general social-cost relief model for all residents has been established.
