Study in Vatican City

Vatican City State is distinct from the Holy See. Within Vatican City, the specialized schools operate under the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (BAV) and the Archivio Apostolico Vaticano (AAV), with study locations including the Cortile del Belvedere. No general local bachelor's, master's and doctoral structure is documented, and Rome-based Pontifical universities are separate institutions outside this local scope. The BAV offers a two-year course in library science. Subjects include bibliography and reference work, bibliology, digital libraries, manuscript books from antiquity to the modern period, library organization and services, conservation and restoration, library history, cataloguing and classification. Admission normally requires a specialist or master's degree, a degree under the former four-year system, a canonical licence or an equivalent qualification; a three-year laurea or Baccalaureato is not sufficient for the stated intake. For the 2026–2028 cycle, applications run from 15 February to 15 July 2026 and require a curriculum vitae, recommendation, qualification and grades, identification, photographs and a motivation statement of no more than 2,000 characters. Selection may include an interview, and admission is limited to 30 places. The AAV offers three specialized paths. The two-year Diploma di Paleografo-Archivista combines paleography, the study of historical handwriting, with diplomatics, the analysis of documents, and archival studies. Its first year covers Latin palaeography, general diplomatics and archival studies; the second covers pontifical diplomatics, codicology and sigillography. The two-year modern and contemporary archival course developed from the former one-year archival course and includes general archival studies, the history of the Roman Curia, digital archival studies, canon and ecclesiastical law, modern and contemporary diplomatics, document conservation, an internship and a final thesis. The one-year Diploma in Paleografia greca focuses on Greek handwriting and codex analysis. AAV admission normally requires a second-cycle university qualification or equivalent, preferably in a historical or humanistic subject. Clergy may qualify with a licenza or doctorate in a historical, theological or legal field. The Paleografo-Archivista and modern archival courses require solid Latin, while the Greek palaeography course requires secure Greek knowledge. Applications generally run from 7 January to 31 August; the two-year AAV courses admit students in odd-numbered years. Applicants submit qualifications and grades, publications where relevant, photographs and identification, take a written entrance test, confirm a place within ten days if admitted and pay the required fee by 31 October. The tests cover translation of a classical or late Latin text for the Paleografo-Archivista course, modern and contemporary history for the archival course, and Greek translation for the Greek course. AAV admission is limited to 36 places. Teaching at both schools normally runs from October to May and is mainly in Italian. The BAV schedule is usually Monday and Tuesday and includes lectures, exercises, conferences, study visits and a compulsory internship after the teaching period. Attendance is compulsory, with no more than eight absences, and subject examinations take place in June and September. AAV teaching combines theory with original documents and codices. The Paleografo-Archivista course meets on Monday and Tuesday mornings with at least two-thirds attendance; the modern archival course uses Wednesday-to-Friday modules including practical work; and Greek palaeography meets one afternoon each week with at least two-thirds attendance. For 2026, the BAV course costs EUR 2,000 in total. AAV tuition costs EUR 1,500 per year, or approximately EUR 3,000 for a two-year course, while Greek palaeography costs EUR 1,500. The fees include the stated dispensations and secretariat or diploma-certificate costs, and payment is made by bank transfer rather than cash or cheque. Two Khouri-Hayde Family Scholarships are listed for 2026–2027, alongside the Treasures of History program and an AAV internship; no general state tuition funding is identified for these schools. The BAV qualification is the Diploma di Biblioteconomia. AAV graduates receive the Diploma di Paleografo-Archivista, the Diploma biennale di Alta formazione in archivistica moderna e contemporanea or the Diploma in Paleografia greca, depending on the course. AAV is recognized in Italy as a higher-education institution of international scientific relevance in paleography, archival studies, bibliography and library science. Foreign second-cycle qualifications may require a CIMEA or other equivalence process. These diplomas can support work as an archivist-palaeographer, modern or contemporary archivist, librarian or library and archive specialist in public, private and ecclesiastical institutions, but they do not guarantee a local job or professional appointment.
