Shopping in Vatican City

The Vatican City State is distinct from the Holy See. Its main shopping services are organized through institutions and concessions rather than a broad network of public shops. The Governorate and its directorates are responsible for the main providers: the Directorate of Economy oversees Tigre-Annona, Emporio and commercial philatelic and numismatic services; the Directorate of Health and Hygiene oversees the Farmacia Vaticana; the Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage oversees museum shops; and the Directorate of Telecommunications and Information Systems oversees Poste e Filatelia. Tigre-Annona is an internal supermarket for Governorate and Holy See employees, their families and Vatican City State residents. Access requires a valid card and is not established as general tourist retail. The store reopened on 15 October 2025 and has about 11,000 products, 1,321 square metres of total space, 875 square metres of sales space, six checkout lanes and 30 parking spaces. Its fresh counters cover meat, bread, catering, fruit and vegetables, takeaway fish and other local products. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 19:30. The store uses an everyday-low-price strategy and offers established delayed collection, while current activation of click and collect has not been confirmed. Magazzini Gabrielli S.p.A. holds the Tigre-Annona concession. The Farmacia Vaticana provides medicines, pharmacy products, over-the-counter products, cosmetics, dermatological products, supplements, medical devices and international products. The Parafarmacia under the colonnade at Piazza San Pietro and Braccio di Carlo Magno serves pilgrims and visitors. Access to the main pharmacy is through Porta Angelica or Porta Sant’Anna and requires the permits office, identification such as a C.I. or passport, and an original prescription for prescription medicines. Digital prescriptions are not accepted. An Italian health card is not required, and the Italian tax deduction does not apply. Winter hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 18:00 and Saturday from 8:30 to 13:00. During the summer period from 13 July to 31 August 2026, weekday hours are 8:30 to 15:00 and Saturday hours remain 8:30 to 13:00. Remote pharmacy sales are being developed. Product availability, payment and delivery conditions should be checked before ordering. Pharmacy shipping is limited to medicines that are not marketed in Italy, is available only to private individuals, and excludes Rome and its province. Clothing and technology have no reliably documented general retail equivalent inside Vatican City. Vatican Museums merchandising offers T-shirts, accessories, bags and religious articles, usually in connection with a museum visit or through its store. Museum bookshops also sell multimedia products, stationery and toys, but they do not replace a full consumer-electronics retailer. External Italian, European Union or other online providers may therefore be needed for ordinary clothing, household goods or technology. The Vatican Museums Store sells publications, sculptures, prints, posters, accessories, home decoration and gifts. CFN, Commercializzazione Filatelica e Numismatica, operates a worldwide online shop for Vatican stamps, coins and related products. CFN requires registration, accepts credit cards through a secured payment page, and limits eligible purchase countries; Vatican City is not shown in the published list. Delivery charges and timing depend on destination, weight and parcel. The stated delivery period is indicative and can reach 120 days, with customs or carrier delays possible. Museum shops generally accept cash and cards, including American Express, Diners and JCB. Tigre-Annona has not published detailed cash and card rules. Vatican City is not part of the European Union, and euro cash is its legal tender, so EU VAT and customs rules do not automatically apply. The customs and tax relationship with Italy follows the 1930 agreement and should be checked for each shipment. No single local consumer code was identified in the reviewed official legal overview. For an in-person purchase, a general right of withdrawal cannot be assumed; keep the receipt and check the seller’s conditions. CFN terms provide a specific process: cancellation is limited to 24 hours after payment confirmation, withdrawal is available within 14 days of receipt, and the goods must be returned within a further 14 days. The customer bears return costs and any customer-side customs charges. Defects or transport damage must be reported within eight days through the stated form or email process. A purchase from an EU-based seller may carry the EU 14-day withdrawal right and two-year minimum legal guarantee, but these protections do not automatically apply to a non-EU seller. The seller’s jurisdiction, delivery terms and import charges determine the practical position. Sustainability measures are most visible in institutional retail. Tigre-Annona uses an ISO 50001-certified concessionaire, recycled-plastic shopping carts, LED lighting, daylight-sensitive controls, real-time refrigeration monitoring and electronic price labels. A PET-bottle compactor can issue shopping vouchers. CFN states that its packaging is entirely plastic-free and uses recyclable or responsibly sourced materials.
