Language in Vietnam

Vietnamese, or tiếng Việt, is the main language used in public life, education, media, business, and most everyday communication. It belongs to the Austroasiatic language family and has developed through long contact with neighboring cultures. Modern Vietnamese is normally written in chữ Quốc ngữ, a Latin-based alphabet with tone marks and other signs. Written accents are important because they show sounds and can distinguish words with different meanings. Vietnamese is tonal. The pitch and shape of the voice are part of a word, so a learner can pronounce the consonants correctly and still be misunderstood if the tone is wrong. Pronouns and forms of address depend strongly on age, family position, gender, and social relationship. Words such as anh, chị, cô, chú, bác, em, and con can show respect and the relationship between speakers. Vietnamese has regional varieties, especially associated with northern, central, and southern speech. Vocabulary, pronunciation, rhythm, and preferred forms of address can differ, while written standard Vietnamese supports communication across the country. Vietnam includes many ethnic communities with their own languages, including languages from several different language families. In some homes and local communities, Vietnamese is used together with another heritage language. Language carries politeness and social meaning, not only information. A greeting, a softener such as ạ, or the choice of a family-based pronoun can make speech warmer and more respectful. A first learner should focus on clear greetings, names, numbers, directions, thanks, apologies, and requests. Listening to local speakers is essential because spelling alone does not teach tones or social use.
