Shopping in Vietnam

Vietnam has many ways to buy everyday goods. A chợ is a market, a cửa hàng is a shop, a siêu thị is a supermarket, and a cửa hàng tiện lợi is a convenience store. Street markets are useful for fresh food, household items, clothing, and local products. Supermarkets and malls usually offer clearer labels, fixed prices, and more predictable product quality. In small shops, you may ask giá bao nhiêu, meaning how much does it cost. The seller may show a calculator, especially when language is limited. Bargaining is more common in some open markets and tourist areas than in supermarkets or shops with marked prices. Discuss the price politely, and leave if the final amount does not suit you. Check size, condition, packaging, and expiry information before buying. For food, choose clean handling and products that are properly sealed when you need predictable storage. Vietnamese currency uses large-looking numbers, so say the amount back or type it into a calculator before paying. Count your change calmly and keep receipts for more expensive purchases. Shopping can support local sellers and give you access to regional crafts and ingredients. Its limits are uneven quality, crowded spaces, language barriers, and the risk of buying something you cannot carry, use, or return.
