Romantic relationship in Zambia

A romantic relationship in Zambia is generally a private relationship between partners rather than a status administered by one national institution. People commonly meet through personal networks, social contacts, religious communities or other community connections. Dating and relationship formation have no nationally documented entry requirement, fixed deadline or standard fee. A couple may remain in a dating relationship, marry, live together as if married or enter a registered union. A registered union and a marriage certificate are forms of documentation, but they are not the same measure: among women currently in a union, the 2024 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey reported 16% with a registered union, 15% with marriage documentation and 13% with a marriage certificate. Polygynous marriages were reported by 10% of married women and 6% of men; the share of women with co-wives was 26% in Southern Province and 3% in both Copperbelt and Lusaka. The same survey reported a median age at first marriage of 19.6 years for women and 24.5 years for men, and a median age at first sex of 16.6 years for women and 18.2 years for men. Among women aged 20–24, 29% had married before age 18 and 5% before age 15. These figures describe population patterns, not a basis for treating child marriage or sexual pressure as acceptable. Situations involving minors require a protection, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence response. Partners may need to discuss whether they want marriage or cohabitation, whether the relationship is exclusive, expectations about children, money, household work, contact with relatives and privacy. Among currently married women surveyed in 2024, 84% participated in decisions about their own health, 73% in major household purchases, 86% in daily household needs and 79% in family visits; 61% participated in all four types of decision. Among women with cash earnings, 86% reported sole or joint control of those earnings, including 35% with sole control and 51% with joint control. Sexual consent applies to each sexual act and can be refused or withdrawn. The survey found that 67% of married women reported being able to refuse sex, 70% could ask a husband to use a condom, and 50% made their own informed decisions about sex, contraception and reproductive health care. Ten percent reported having been pressured by a husband, partner or family member to become pregnant. Contraceptive and HIV or sexually transmitted infection advice is available through Ministry of Health primary-care facilities, health centres, rural health posts, hospitals, youth-friendly services and some school or community outreach, although privacy, supplies and availability vary by district and provider. Abuse can be physical, sexual or emotional. It can include coercion, harassment, threats and technology-facilitated abuse such as sending or threatening to send sexual images without consent. The survey recorded, among women who had ever had a husband or intimate partner, 15.5% reporting emotional violence, 15.9% physical violence and 7.0% sexual violence in the previous 12 months; 24.8% reported at least one of these forms. The combined figure was 27.9% among women currently married or living together and 26.1% among divorced, separated or widowed women. A former partner can therefore remain a safety risk after separation. For gender-based violence, the 24-hour toll-free 944 line can connect a survivor to the referral system. Zambia Police Victim Support Units, police stations, Gender-Based Violence One Stop Centres, Ministry of Health facilities, social workers, shelters and psychosocial services provide different parts of the response. A One Stop Centre can combine health, psychosocial, legal and police services under one roof and is free of charge, subject to local availability. U-Report at 878 provides free confidential sexual and reproductive health and HIV advice by SMS. Traditional, religious and community leaders may offer informal support, but their practical authority and ability to protect someone vary. Breakup and separation are usually handled informally when no marriage, property or maintenance issue requires a separate civil-law process. There is no national office for ending a dating relationship or obtaining couple counselling. If a former partner threatens or harms someone, contact 944, the police or a Victim Support Unit, One Stop Centre, health facility, shelter or psychosocial service. Questions about dissolving a marriage, property or maintenance belong to civil-law services rather than the relationship itself.
