Crime in Albania

Crime is conduct treated by the justice system as an offense against a person, property, public order, or another protected interest. In Albania, the main institutions involved can include Policia e Shtetit, prosecutors, courts, and services that support victims. Theft can involve unattended phones, wallets, bags, bicycles, vehicles, or belongings in homes and accommodation. Burglary means unlawful entry into a building to steal or commit another offense, while robbery involves taking property through force or threats. Fraud relies on deception rather than physical force. Common patterns include false sales, fake accommodation, invented emergencies, impersonation, advance-payment demands, dishonest investment offers, and requests for bank details or verification codes. Cybercrime can affect email, social media, messaging accounts, online banking, and personal data. Criminals may use urgent messages, copied profiles, harmful links, weak passwords, or private images to steal money, take over accounts, or pressure a victim. Violence can occur in public, at work, within families, or between intimate partners. Domestic violence is not merely a private disagreement, and a person facing threats, coercion, stalking, physical harm, or sexual violence can seek police and specialist support. Organized crime exists as a law-enforcement concern, but it should not be confused with the everyday experience of every resident or visitor. Ordinary people are more likely to manage safety through routine care, reliable contacts, secure payments, and attention to suspicious behavior. For an immediate threat in Albania, a person can call 112 and request police or other emergency assistance. A useful report gives the location, what is happening, descriptions of people or vehicles, injuries, weapons if seen, and the safest way for responders to make contact. After a non-urgent incident, preserve evidence and report the facts as clearly as possible. Police and prosecutors decide how the case proceeds, while courts determine legal responsibility, so a report does not itself guarantee a particular outcome or recovery of property. People suspected or accused of crime have legal protections, including access to legal assistance and formal procedures. Victims also have interests in safety, information, evidence preservation, medical care, and support, although the exact response depends on the case.
