Disasters in Albania

Earthquakes are an important hazard in Albania because the country lies in a seismically active region. Strong shaking can damage buildings, roads, electricity lines, and water systems, while smaller aftershocks may continue after the main event. Flooding can occur near rivers, on low ground, and in urban areas where heavy rain overwhelms drainage. Mountain streams can rise quickly, so a place that looks safe in normal weather may become dangerous during intense rain. Wildfires are most likely in dry vegetation, forests, and rural land during hot or windy conditions. Fire can move quickly, smoke can threaten health far from the flames, and blocked roads can make evacuation harder. Landslides and rockfalls can affect steep slopes, mountain roads, and land weakened by rain, fire, construction, or earthquakes. Heavy snow and ice can also isolate upland communities and interrupt transport or power. Albania's civil protection system is commonly described as Mbrojtja Civile. Municipalities, police, firefighters, medical services, national institutions, volunteers, and other organizations may share responsibilities depending on the scale and location of the emergency. Warnings and instructions may come through authorities, broadcasters, mobile communication, local officials, police, or emergency workers. Power and network failures are possible, so a battery radio, written contacts, and direct communication with neighbors can remain useful. During an immediate emergency, people can call the unified emergency number 112 when communication is available. Callers should state what happened, give the clearest possible location, describe injuries or continuing dangers, and follow the operator's instructions. Personal preparation cannot prevent a disaster, but it can reduce confusion and delay. A household plan, safe meeting points, basic supplies, important documents, and knowledge of the nearest safe routes provide a practical starting point.
