Language in Albania

Albanian, or shqip, is the official and main public language of Albania. It forms its own branch of the Indo-European language family and is not a dialect of a neighboring language. Standard Albanian is used in schools, public administration, formal writing, and much national broadcasting. It is based mainly on southern Tosk features but serves speakers from all regions. Spoken Albanian has substantial regional variety. The two broad dialect groupings are Gheg, associated mainly with the north, and Tosk, associated mainly with the south, with many local forms inside both. Dialect is not incorrect speech. People may use a local variety with family and friends, standard Albanian in formal settings, and a mixture in daily life. Albanian uses a Latin-based alphabet with thirty-six letters. Several letters and letter pairs represent sounds that learners must practice as complete units rather than reading them exactly as in English. Useful expressions include përshëndetje for hello, mirëmëngjes for good morning, faleminderit for thank you, ju lutem for please or you are welcome, and mirupafshim for goodbye. Pronunciation improves through careful listening and repetition. Names of the country and people also matter. Albania is Shqipëri in Albanian, an Albanian person may be called shqiptar or shqiptare according to gender, and the language is shqip. Minority and community languages are also spoken in Albania, and migration has added further multilingual experience. Language ability depends on region, generation, education, family, and personal history, so a second language should never be assumed. Good communication uses short sentences, context, patience, and confirmation. Speaking loudly does not solve a language gap, while writing a name, date, address, or number can prevent mistakes.
