Albania has no single religion followed in the same way by everyone. Muslim, Bektashi, Orthodox Christian, Catholic Christian, other religious, and non-religious identities are all part of society. Islam spread widely during the Ottoman period, and many Albanian Muslims belong to the Sunni tradition. Practice ranges from regular worship to a mainly family or cultural identity. The Bektashi order is a distinct Sufi Muslim tradition with an important place in Albanian history. Its places of gathering are often called teqe, and its religious leadership has a notable connection with Albania. Orthodox Christianity has deep historical roots, especially in parts of southern and southeastern Albania. Churches, icons, liturgy, fasting traditions, and feast days form important parts of Orthodox community life. Catholic Christianity has long-standing communities, particularly in northern and northwestern areas. Parishes, churches, religious orders, family customs, and festivals have helped preserve communal life through difficult periods. The communist state severely restricted and then officially banned public religion. Religious institutions were closed or repurposed, clergy and believers were persecuted, and this experience still influences family memory and levels of religious knowledge. Religious freedom returned after communism, and communities rebuilt institutions and public worship. At the same time, many people remained secular or combined inherited identity with limited formal practice. Mixed friendships, neighborhoods, and families are common, and national or family ties may be more visible than religious division. Coexistence is a valuable social practice, but it should not be treated as proof that disagreement or discrimination never occurs. Respectful conduct means letting people describe their own belief. Clothing, names, region, food, or family background cannot reliably reveal a person's faith or level of observance.
