Elections in Argentina

Argentina is a representative democracy in which elections give public authority to elected officials. The Constitution and electoral rules organize voting, while political parties and electoral alliances present candidates. Different jurisdictions elect different authorities. National elections choose the President and Vice President and renew seats in the National Congress, while provinces, CABA, and municipalities or communes elect their own authorities under their respective rules. The national presidency is decided through a direct popular vote with a possible second round, commonly called balotaje. The Chamber of Deputies and the Senate use different systems because they represent different things. Deputies broadly represent the population, while senators represent the provinces and CABA. It identifies whether a person is registered and normally indicates the assigned voting place, table, and voter order number. On election day, the voter usually presents an accepted identity document to the table authorities, receives the voting materials, marks or selects a choice in privacy under the applicable system, and deposits the vote as instructed. The voter's participation is then recorded, and proof of voting is provided. Ballot design and voting procedures may differ by jurisdiction and election. Argentina has traditionally used party paper ballots in many elections, while some jurisdictions or electoral frameworks use a single-ballot format. Voters should follow the official instructions that apply to their specific contest. The elecciones primarias known as PASO are a legally organized primary mechanism used to select candidacies and determine which political groups can proceed under the applicable rules. Their operation can be changed by legislation, so voters should treat official instructions for each election as decisive rather than assume every contest follows an identical process. Votes are counted at each voting table after polls close, and results are documented for later aggregation and formal review. Party representatives may observe the process, while electoral authorities resolve formal questions and confirm the definitive result. Elections are only one part of democratic participation.
