Language in Belarus

Belarusian and Russian are the two official languages of Belarus. They are related East Slavic languages, but each has its own vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, literature, and cultural meaning. Russian is widely used in cities, workplaces, services, media, and everyday conversation. A visitor can often manage daily tasks in Russian, but this does not make Belarusian unimportant. Belarusian is the national language associated closely with Belarusian history and identity. It appears in literature, music, place names, cultural activities, education, public signs, and personal communication. Most Belarusian and Russian writing uses Cyrillic letters. Learners who can read the alphabet gain quick access to signs, transport information, names, menus, and maps. Some speakers mix Belarusian and Russian features in everyday speech. This mixed speech is often called Trasianka, although the label can carry social judgments and should not be used to mock anyone. Belarusian also has more than one spelling tradition in cultural and historical use. Beginners can first learn the standard form they encounter most often and recognize that alternative forms exist. Polish, Ukrainian, Yiddish, Lithuanian, Tatar traditions, and other languages belong to the country's historical and community landscape. Foreign languages are also learned and used in education, travel, work, and online life. Language choice can depend on setting, habit, audience, family, region, and identity. People may switch languages during a conversation or answer in a different language from the one they understand. Polite communication matters more than perfect grammar. Asking which language a person prefers is usually better than making assumptions about identity or ability.
