Religion in Belarus

Religious life in Belarus reflects centuries of contact between Eastern and Western Christianity and the presence of several minority communities. Belief, cultural identity, and active participation do not always match. Eastern Orthodox Christianity is the largest and most visible religious tradition. An Orthodox church is commonly called a tserkov, and worship uses icons, candles, chanting, and a rich cycle of feasts and fasts. Roman Catholic communities are particularly important in some families and western regions. The local word kostel commonly refers to a Catholic church, distinguishing it from an Orthodox church. Protestant Christianity has historical and present-day communities in Belarus. Congregations differ in worship style, organization, music, and emphasis on scripture. Jewish communities were once a major part of life in many Belarusian towns and cities. The Holocaust destroyed much of this world, but Jewish heritage, memory, cemeteries, synagogues, and community life remain important. Muslim life has deep connections with the Lipka Tatar presence in the region. Other religious and spiritual communities also form part of the country's diversity. Many people are secular, uncertain, privately spiritual, or connected to religion mainly through family ceremonies and holidays. It is therefore unwise to infer personal belief from a name, birthplace, or ethnic background. Baptisms, weddings, funerals, memorial practices, Easter, Christmas, and visits to graves can unite religious and family traditions. Dates and customs may differ between communities. Religious institutions operate within the wider legal and political environment. Practical freedom, public visibility, and relations with authorities may not be identical for every community.
