Bolivia recognises four university types: public autonomous universities, private universities, indigenous universities and special-regime universities, which include military and police universities. The wider Educación Superior also includes teacher-training, technical, technological and artistic institutes, but those follow different pathways. Public autonomous universities receive state support and follow a tuition-free principle, although matrícula, admission, faculty and service charges may apply. Private universities charge institution-specific fees and must have authorised programmes; applicants should verify the legal recognition of the exact career, campus and study modality. Indigenous universities such as UNIBOL Aymara Tupak Katari, UNIBOL Quechua Casimiro Huanca and UNIBOL Apiaguaiki Tupa combine public, community, intercultural and productive education with territorial and indigenous-language focuses. Admission may use a PSA, a Curso Preuniversitario or Admisión Especial, depending on the university, faculty, available places, subjects, thresholds, documents, fees and dates; completing one option does not automatically guarantee a place. University programmes may lead to Técnico Superior or Licenciatura, followed by postgraduate qualifications such as Diplomado, Especialidad, Maestría or Doctorado. Private minimums include three years and 3,400 academic hours for Técnico Superior, generally four years and 4,800 hours for Licenciatura, and longer requirements for health careers. Students enrol under the institution’s current gestión or semester calendar, complete the study plan and assessments, and meet institutional graduation rules. Public institutions issue their own diploma and professional title, while private graduates generally receive the Diploma Académico from the university and the Título Profesional through the Ministerio de Educación. Foreign qualifications require revalidation or homologation through the Ministry, and regulated careers may require additional practice, service or licensing steps.
