School in Burundi

Burundi's formal school system runs from preschool through fundamental and post-fundamental education. Fundamental education normally covers nine years, while post-fundamental general, pedagogical and technical programs lead toward the Examen d'Etat. Access is legally open and compulsory until age 15, but poverty, distance, documentation, household duties and limited capacity still restrict attendance. Public primary tuition is abolished, yet families commonly pay for materials, uniforms, books, transport, food and other contributions.
