Apprenticeship in Croatia

Apprenticeship in Croatia is closely connected to strukovno obrazovanje, meaning vocational education. The local term naukovanje may be used for apprenticeship-style training, especially in craft-related paths. Many young people enter vocational education after completing basic school. Programs prepare them for an occupation, further learning, or both. Learning can be divided between a vocational school and practical training. The school teaches general and occupational subjects, while a workplace, workshop, laboratory, or school facility develops hands-on skills. The practical part may involve an employer or qualified craft business, known as an obrtnik. The responsibilities of the school, learner, and workplace should be recorded clearly before training begins. Learners are normally assessed on both knowledge and practical ability. Successful completion may include school assessments, practical demonstrations, or a final requirement set by the program. Vocational programs do not all have the same structure. Some place greater emphasis on school-based learning, while others include substantial work-based training. An apprenticeship can provide real experience, work habits, professional contacts, and a clearer view of an occupation. It does not automatically guarantee a job, and the quality of supervision can differ between workplaces. Some occupations or later career steps require additional examinations, authorization, or further education. The qualification earned should therefore be checked against the learner's long-term goal. A useful first step is to select an occupation and compare official vocational programs that lead toward it. The learner should then confirm where practical training occurs, who supervises it, and what qualification follows.
