School in Croatia

The Croatian school system includes preschool, basic school, and secondary school. The Ministry sets the broad national framework, while schools organize daily teaching within that framework. Osnovna škola is basic school and normally covers primary and lower-secondary learning in one continuous stage. It gives children general knowledge and forms the compulsory core of school education. Children usually attend a school connected to their home area, although enrollment choices and conditions can vary. Families should contact the school serving their address when arranging a child's entry. After osnovna škola, students can apply to srednja škola, meaning secondary school. The main forms are gimnazija for broad academic preparation, vocational programs for particular fields, and arts programs for specialized talent. Secondary admission usually considers the chosen program and the student's previous school record. Some specialized programs may also examine particular abilities or suitability. Teaching is usually in Croatian. Schools serving recognized national minorities may use a minority language under specific models, and international or foreign-language options exist in limited settings. Students are assessed through class participation, assignments, tests, oral work, and practical tasks. Parents or guardians can communicate with teachers and school staff about learning, attendance, support, and conduct. Schools may provide professional support through staff such as pedagogues, psychologists, or special education professionals. Available support differs, so families should explain a child's needs early and provide relevant records. Moving into or within Croatia can require school reports, identity and address documents, and an evaluation of previous education. Contacting the receiving school before the move gives time to resolve language, placement, and document questions.
