Continuing education in Croatia includes organized learning after or alongside a person's initial education. Common Croatian terms are obrazovanje odraslih for adult education and cjeloživotno učenje for lifelong learning. People use continuing education to improve current work, return to learning, change occupation, gain digital or language skills, or pursue a personal interest. The right form depends on the intended result. Providers may include adult education institutions, higher education institutions, vocational schools, employers, professional bodies, associations, and private training organizations. Their courses do not all have the same status. Some programs lead to formally recognized qualifications or parts of qualifications. Others offer professional development, preparation, short practical training, or only confirmation that the person attended. Prekvalifikacija commonly refers to retraining for a different occupational direction. It should not be confused with a short course that adds one skill but does not establish a new qualification. Learning may happen in person, online, at work, or through a mixed format. Assessment may involve tests, projects, practical demonstrations, attendance, or no formal assessment at all. Upskilling can improve confidence, mobility, and work performance. Its limits include time, cost, uneven provider quality, and the possibility that an employer or authority will not accept the resulting certificate for a specific purpose.
