Study in Croatia

Higher education in Croatia is called visoko obrazovanje. It is provided by institutions such as universities, called sveučilišta, and professionally oriented institutions, often called veleučilišta. University study generally emphasizes academic and scientific knowledge. Professional study usually places more emphasis on applying knowledge in an occupation, although both types can include theory and practical work. Programs are commonly organized into undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Some fields use integrated programs that combine stages into one longer course of study. Croatia uses the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, known as ECTS. Credits describe the expected student workload and can support recognition between programs, but transfer is not automatic. Admission depends on the program and the applicant's previous education. Applicants educated abroad may need recognition or evaluation of their earlier qualification and translated documents. Most programs are taught in Croatian, while some are offered partly or fully in another language. Applicants should verify the actual teaching and examination language for the specific program. Study includes lectures, seminars, laboratory or practical work, independent learning, and examinations. Some programs also require placements, projects, artistic work, or a final thesis. Higher education can improve knowledge, professional access, and international mobility. It also requires time and money, and a degree alone does not guarantee employment or permission to practise a regulated profession. Students should compare curriculum, qualification type, institutional status, student support, and total living needs. International students must separately understand any rules affecting their stay, insurance, and right to work.
