Employment in Croatia

Employment, commonly called zaposlenje, is work performed for an employer under the employer's organization and direction. The employee provides work, and the employer provides pay and manages the workplace. The central document is the employment contract, or ugovor o radu. It should clearly identify the parties and describe the job, workplace, starting point, working time, pay, and other essential conditions. Employment may be open-ended or limited to a defined period or purpose. A fixed-term arrangement is not the same as permanent employment, so its ending conditions deserve careful attention. A probation period may be agreed to test whether the job and worker fit each other. It should not be treated as work without rules, pay, or documentation. Salary is often expressed as gross and net pay. Payslips help the employee see earnings, deductions, additions, and the amount paid. Employees normally participate in Croatia's systems for health, pension, and employment-related protection through registration and contributions. The employer performs important administrative steps, but the employee should still keep evidence. Employment also involves working-time rules, rest, leave, workplace safety, and protection from unfair treatment. Exact entitlements can depend on the contract, collective rules, workplace policies, and applicable law. An employment relationship can end by agreement, notice, expiry of a fixed term, or another recognized reason. Written records are important because the reason and procedure can affect later rights.
