Employment in Cuba

Employment in Cuba is commonly called empleo or an employment relationship. It differs from running an independent activity because an employed person works under an employer’s organization and direction. The state remains a major employer through institutions and state enterprises. Authorized private businesses, cooperatives, farmers, and other recognized organizations may also employ workers under the rules applying to their sector. A formal relationship usually starts after the employer checks identity, qualifications, and suitability for the role. Some jobs also involve a medical check, professional credentials, public placement, or another sector-specific step. The employment document, often understood as a contrato de trabajo, should make the essential conditions clear. These include the parties, position, duties, workplace, working time, pay, start of service, and whether the arrangement has a defined or continuing duration. Employment can be permanent, temporary, seasonal, or linked to a specific task where the applicable system permits it. A temporary label should not hide the real nature or duration of regular work. The employer organizes assignments and maintains employment and payment records. The worker performs the agreed role, follows lawful instructions, respects workplace discipline, and uses equipment responsibly. Changes to duties, workplace, schedule, or pay should be explained and properly recorded. A worker should never sign a blank document or a document that does not match the actual agreement. Employment may end through resignation, agreement, expiry of a valid temporary arrangement, disciplinary action, organizational change, or another recognized reason. The worker should request written evidence of the ending date, final settlement, and service record. Employment does not by itself solve every practical need. Transport, housing, family care, access to meals, and the reliability of the full compensation package can strongly affect whether a position is workable.
