Language in Djibouti

Djibouti has two official languages, Arabic and French, while Somali and Afar are widely used national languages in daily life and community settings. French dominates formal administration, education, higher education and legal documents; Arabic is central to state functions, religion and cultural ties. Somali and Afar support everyday communication, trust and cultural participation, but a nationwide right to written government services in either language is not established.
