Media in Estonia

Estonia has public, commercial, community, and personal media. They distribute information through television, radio, websites, print, podcasts, newsletters, and social networks. The national public broadcaster is commonly known as ERR, short for Eesti Rahvusringhääling. Public broadcasting is only one part of a wider and varied media environment. Estonian-language media forms the main national information space. Russian-language and English-language content also exists, but the range and local depth may differ. Local municipalities often publish practical notices about services, construction, events, schools, and disruptions. These notices serve a different purpose from independent reporting. News, commentary, advertising, entertainment, and official announcements should be distinguished. The visual style of a post does not prove which category it belongs to. Social platforms make information fast and accessible, but they also spread rumours, manipulated material, and missing context. A widely shared claim is not automatically a verified fact. Media literacy means checking who published something, when it was published, what evidence is presented, and whether another reliable outlet reports the same event. Images and headlines should be considered in their full context. A balanced media routine combines urgent alerts, dependable news, and local practical information. Limiting repeated exposure can also protect concentration and emotional well-being.
