People lived in the region of present-day Gabon long before written records, as shown by archaeological evidence such as stone tools and other remains. Over time, Bantu-speaking communities moved through the area and developed societies connected by kinship, farming, fishing, hunting and regional trade. Coastal and inland communities traded goods including forest products, food, minerals and later enslaved people, linking the area to wider Atlantic and Central African networks. European merchants and explorers reached the coast from the fifteenth century onward, while French influence expanded during the nineteenth century. France established colonial control over Gabon, and the territory later became part of French Equatorial Africa. Colonial administration changed land use, labor, trade, education and political authority, while local communities continued to shape social and cultural life. Gabon became independent in 1960, with Léon M'ba as its first president. After his death, Omar Bongo led the country for more than four decades, and the Gabonese Democratic Party dominated national politics for much of that period. Economic development, especially through oil production, changed the state's finances and urban life but did not remove regional and social inequalities. A military takeover in 2023 ended the previous presidential period and began a political transition. Historical interpretation must compare official records with oral history, archaeology and accounts from communities affected by colonial rule and later political decisions.
