Georgian meals often place several dishes in the center for everyone to share. Restaurants may bring food when each dish is ready rather than serving every person at the same moment. A formal or festive feast is called a supra. A toast leader, the tamada, guides a sequence of toasts, while guests eat, talk, and may respond with their own words. Khachapuri is cheese-filled bread with several regional forms. Khinkali are filled dumplings, usually eaten by holding the top knot and carefully drinking the broth inside. Other common foods include lobio, a bean dish, pkhali, vegetables mixed with walnuts and seasonings, and mtsvadi, pieces of grilled meat. Sauces, herbs, garlic, and sour flavors are important in many recipes. Georgia has a long wine tradition, including wine made in large clay vessels called qvevri. Alcohol is culturally visible, but a guest can decline and should never be pressured to drink beyond personal limits. Vegetarian eating is possible because beans, vegetables, bread, walnuts, and cheese are common. Vegan or allergy-safe eating needs clearer questions because butter, cheese, eggs, meat stock, or walnuts may not be obvious. Menus may be in Georgian, sometimes with translations or pictures. Portion sizes and whether a dish is meant for sharing are worth checking before ordering. Food hygiene depends on the establishment and handling. Choose food that looks properly stored and freshly prepared, and use safe drinking water when local conditions are uncertain.
