Shopping in Georgia

Large supermarkets provide fixed prices, receipts, packaged goods, and regular payment terminals. Small neighborhood shops can be quicker and more personal, but their selection and payment options vary. Traditional markets are often called bazari. They are important for fruit, vegetables, herbs, cheese, meat, household goods, and regional products, with different sellers operating inside one market area. Market produce may be priced by weight, bundle, or piece. Ask for the unit and total before accepting the goods, especially when labels are absent. Cards are widely accepted in larger urban shops, while cash remains useful in markets and small outlets. A buyer should check the total displayed on the terminal before confirming payment. Georgian labels commonly show the product name, ingredients, origin, weight, and storage information. Imported goods may carry an added Georgian label, and translation help can be useful for allergies. Receipts support returns, warranty questions, and price checks. Return practices can differ by seller and type of item, so ask about them before buying expensive or unsuitable goods. Seasonal local food can be abundant and affordable, while imported or specialized products may be harder to find. Availability also changes between Tbilisi, regional cities, and villages. Shopping becomes easier after comparing a supermarket, a bazari, and a nearby small shop. Each serves a different purpose, and no single format is best for every purchase.
