Upskilling in Ireland

Upskilling means developing knowledge or abilities after initial education or while already working. Reskilling usually means preparing for a substantially different kind of work. In Ireland, continuing learning is offered through employers, Further Education and Training providers, higher education institutions, professional bodies, community organisations, and other training providers. The right setting depends on the learner’s goal. Further Education and Training, commonly called FET, includes practical, vocational, literacy, numeracy, and adult learning opportunities. It can support progression to employment, an apprenticeship, or further study. Higher education providers offer part-time programmes, postgraduate learning, and smaller units of study. Micro-credentials are short, focused learning awards or certificates, but their recognition and ability to combine into a larger award vary. Workplace upskilling can include supervised practice, short courses, mentoring, job rotation, and training for new tools or responsibilities. Some learning is recognised formally, while other learning is valuable mainly within a role or organisation. Programmes may be full-time, part-time, evening-based, online, blended, or workplace-based. Flexible delivery can improve access, but online learning still requires time, equipment, digital confidence, and regular participation. A recognised award may help show achievement, but a certificate alone does not guarantee promotion or employment. Learners should connect course content with real tasks, evidence of skill, and realistic opportunities. The main limits are often time, cost, access, caring duties, confidence, and uncertain course quality. Clear goals and careful comparison reduce the risk of choosing training that does not meet the learner’s needs.
