Study in Ireland

Higher education in Ireland follows post-primary or further education and includes a range of degree and other advanced programmes. Providers include universities, technological universities, and other recognised higher education institutions. Undergraduate study is usually the first stage of higher education. Postgraduate study follows an earlier degree or comparable preparation and includes taught programmes and research routes. The National Framework of Qualifications helps describe the level of recognised awards. Students should check both the framework level and the exact award because programmes at a similar level can have different content and purposes. The Central Applications Office, commonly called the CAO, processes many undergraduate applications. It does not teach courses or decide every admission matter, and some applicants or programmes use different application routes. Entry may depend on school results, particular subjects, a further education award, prior study, a portfolio, an interview, relevant experience, or another approved route. Mature and international applicants may have separate procedures. Teaching can include lectures, seminars, laboratories, studios, placements, group work, and independent study. Assessment may use examinations, essays, projects, presentations, practical work, and workplace evidence. Study involves more than attending classes. Students must manage reading, deadlines, communication, travel or housing, wellbeing, digital systems, and everyday living costs. A qualification can open routes to work or further study, but it does not guarantee a particular career. Programme recognition, professional requirements, skills, experience, and labour demand can all affect later options.
