School in Ireland

School in Ireland begins with primary education and continues through post-primary education. Schools may differ in ethos, language, management, size, subjects, and local admission arrangements. Primary school develops literacy, numeracy, social learning, creativity, physical development, and knowledge of the wider world. It includes infant classes followed by numbered class levels. Post-primary school begins with the Junior Cycle. Students study a broad range of subjects and take part in classroom learning, projects, practical activities, and assessment. Some schools offer Transition Year after the Junior Cycle. It is an optional programme in many settings and often includes personal development, work experience, projects, and learning beyond normal examination subjects. The Senior Cycle prepares students for completion of post-primary education. The Leaving Certificate is the best-known programme, while other senior-cycle routes provide different balances of academic, vocational, and practical learning. English is the main language of instruction in most schools. Irish is part of school life, and Gaelscoileanna or other Irish-medium schools teach mainly through Irish. Many schools have a religious or other stated ethos, while their day-to-day communities may include families with varied beliefs. Parents should read the school’s ethos, policies, curriculum information, and admission arrangements together. Schools support learning and wellbeing, but available subjects, programmes, facilities, and specialist supports vary. Families should contact schools directly about a child’s needs and avoid assuming that every school offers the same provision.
