Languages in Ireland

Ireland has two official languages, Irish and English. English is the main everyday language for most people, while Irish, or Gaeilge, remains central to the country’s cultural and educational life. Irish is spoken to different degrees across the country. Gaeltacht areas are communities where Irish has a particularly important role in daily and public life. Most schools teach mainly through English and include Irish in the curriculum. Irish-medium schools teach across subjects through Irish and are commonly described as Gaelscoileanna at primary level, with Irish-medium provision also available at post-primary level. People arriving in Ireland may hear local accents and expressions that differ from textbook English. Understanding often improves gradually through repeated listening and ordinary conversation. English language learning is available in different settings, including adult education, community learning, further education, and private courses. ESOL is a common term for English language support for speakers of other languages. Many families use Polish, Arabic, French, Romanian, Chinese languages, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and numerous other languages. Maintaining a home language can support family relationships, identity, and the later learning of additional languages. Language ability develops through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A learner may be strong in one of these areas and still need help in another. Language courses can improve communication and confidence, but progress also needs regular practice in real situations. A certificate may describe a level, yet employers, schools, and institutions may assess language needs in their own ways.
