Language in Laos

Lao is the nationwide official language of Laos and the Lao script is used in national administration, legislation and public education. More than 50 languages are spoken among 49 officially recognized ethnic groups, including Lao-Tai, Mon-Khmer, Hmong-Mien and Sino-Tibetan communities. About 40% of the population has a mother tongue other than Lao, so Lao often connects home and community languages with education, public services and participation.
